Emirates Steel Arkan, the largest publicly-traded steel and building materials company in the UAE, has announced that it will soon roll-out a new operating model, designed to leverage the combined strengths of its steel and building materials businesses, and align its efforts to realise the organisation’s vision and strategic ambitions.

The new operating model creates two separate business units: Emirates Steel and Emirates Building Materials.

Emirates Steel and Emirates Building Materials will each have their dedicated leadership to focus on driving growth within their respective units, who will be reporting directly to Emirates Steel Arkan Group CEO, Engineer Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi.

Saeed Al Ghafri will lead the Emirates Steel business as CEO, while Saeed Al Dhaheri will lead the Building Materials business as Acting CEO and VP Commercial.

Engineer Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi said: “We carefully considered the most effective way to enable the company to leverage the combined strengths and synergies of Emirates Steel and Building Materials to realise our strategic ambitions and growth aspirations. The result of that work is a new operating model designed to propel us forward, optimise our operations, and pave the way for future success.

“The new operating model will also be guided by our new unified values, People, Accountability, and Innovation, based on the ‘one team mentality’ culture, which will enable us to deliver our strategic goals effectively and efficiently while providing more opportunities for our people to thrive.”

He added that the new business units will also be supported by centralised hubs for finance, human capital, technology, strategy and transformation, as well as a dedicated projects division.

Emirates Steel and Arkan Building Materials had previously merged in 2021 to form Emirates Steel Arkan. Since then, the combined entity has embarked on a transformation journey in order to unify and streamline departments, with an emphasis on prioritising people’s safety at key manufacturing sites. The business also identified core efficiencies across its operations, strengthened its financial standing and developed a powerful decarbonisation roadmap to reach Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Engie and steel producer Posco have announced they will be spearheading a consortium to develop a 1.2mtp green ammonia project on a greenfield site located in Duqm, Oman. Other key partners in the consortium include Samsung Engineering, Korea East-West Power Co (EWP), Korea Southern Power Co (Kospo), and FutureTech Energy Ventures Company Ltd (a subsidiary of PTTEP).

The Engie and Posco led-consortium has been named the winner of land block (Z1-02) offered by Hydrom, the orchestrator and master planner of Oman’s green hydrogen industry. The land block will include a total renewable energy capacity of approximately 5GW, which comprises wind and solar power, in addition to battery energy storage (BESS) and a hydrogen plant that will produce 200 kilotons per annum (ktpa) of green hydrogen.

The hydrogen will then be transported by a pipeline to the Special Economic Zone at Duqm, where it will be converted into approximately 1.2m tons per annum (mtpa) of green ammonia for export. The commercial operation date (COD) is expected to be early 2030.

“This venture marks a significant leap forward in the worldwide dedication to expediting the transition to low-carbon energy. With a presence in Oman for more than a quarter-century, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to supporting the energy transition in the country and the region. By joining forces with our consortium partners, we aim to unlock Oman’s extraordinary renewable energy potential while capitalising on their expertise and capabilities,” stated Frederic Claux, Managing Director, Flexible Generation & Retail, AMEA and Country Manager GCC at Engie.

He added, “Ultimately, this collaboration propels Engie toward its global ambitions of attaining a hydrogen capacity of 4GW by 2030.”

In March 2022, Posco and Engie signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore joint development opportunities for green hydrogen production and related infrastructure in the Middle East, Australia, and Latin America. This venture symbolises a continuation of their combined efforts and movement in Engie’s quest for Net Zero carbon by 2045 and Posco’s ambition for a green hydrogen-based steel business by 2050.

Magnom Properties has announced that the futuristic ‘Forbes International Tower’ will be the first-of-its-kind project in the world to run entirely on the Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) system.

The LOHC technology pioneers new levels of sustainable power within a structure and enables hydrogen to be stored, transported and released in a safe and environmentally-friendly manner. The highly innovative, eco-responsive tower will be set in the heart of the rapidly-rising New Administrative Capital in Cairo, Egypt.

In line with the sustainable vision of the zero-carbon emissions commercial tower, Magnom Properties has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, and H2-Enterprises, a global hydrogen generation and energy storage solutions company. They will together tap into the long-term potential of clean hydrogen to accelerate the ambitious zero carbon emission goals of the Forbes International Tower, which is designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG Architecture).

Using the proprietary technologies of H2-Enterprises to create clean hydrogen by using previously non-recyclable plastics and other organic wastes as feedstock for its energy production – along with Schneider Electric’s innovative digital solutions for energy management – the Forbes International Tower will not only tackle critical energy challenges, but also power the 24/7 needs of the tower’s operations in a sustainable manner.

The announcement follows Magnom Properties revealing it was working with Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, (AS+GG Architecture) and Chicago’s The Carbon Lab to deliver a series of sustainable projects across Saudi Arabia in December 2022.

The MoU was signed by Othman A Ibrahim, CEO, Rawabi Holding and Vice Chairman of Magnom Properties, and Maged Marie, CEO of Magnom Properties, with Sebastien Riez, Cluster President for the North East Africa and Levant region, Schneider Electric, and Michael Stusch, Executive Chairman and CEO of H2-Enterprises. The signing ceremony took place at the offices of Magnom Properties at ICD Brookfield Place at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).

“As an organisation committed to long-term sustainability in the region, we are delighted to sign the MoU with Schneider Electric and H2-Enterprises to drive innovative smart climate solutions that address urban development challenges,” said Othman A Ibrahim.

“Through this partnership, we aim to elevate the standards of sustainability and environmentally responsible practices in the region’s real estate sector, in line with the ambitious goals of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

Maged Marie added: “Clean hydrogen represents the future of electricity generation. By adopting the novel waste-to-hydrogen technology to power its energy needs, the Forbes International Tower has once again demonstrated its leading role in driving innovations to enhance energy efficiency and achieve its vision of zero-carbon emissions.

“The partnership with Schneider Electric and H2-Enterprises further reinforces our commitment to building a self-sustaining, environmentally intelligent structure, and places the Forbes International Tower at the forefront of revolutionising the sustainability landscape in the region.”

Metro-Indoor_1000x600.jpg

Oman’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has announced the routes of Muscat Metro, the first-ever mass transit network across the capital city, have now been finalised. The next step will be to conduct a feasibility study for the construction of the Bausher-Al Amerat tunnel, set to be the network’s main link and backbone.

The Muscat Metro is part of the Greater Muscat Masterplan, which focuses on systematic urban expansion as well as allocation of spaces for greenery and landscaping.

The masterplan is in its final stages of preparation and design and will enter implementation stages early next year, after approval from the relevant authorities, said Engineer Ibrahim Hamoud Al Waeli, Executive Director of Urban Strategy at the ministry.

The Muscat Metro routes have been finalised based on a set of key elements such as ease of access, likely rates of footfall and the availability of main stations in strategic areas in the capital. This is in addition to transport networks extending beyond the metro itself, notably express buses and other means of transport to and from the metro.

As for the land uses linked to the economic sector, the masterplan will lend support to the idea of ‘economic blocs’. These include the innovation and knowledge bloc, represented by Knowledge Oasis Muscat, the Sultan Qaboos University and Al Rusayl.

Another segment related to land use in the economic sector is seen in the ‘Industrial and logistic sectors bloc’ namely in the areas of Khazaen, Ruwi, Al Misfah and Al Rusayl.

The ‘tourism and economy bloc’ will be represented in the masterplan by the areas of Muscat, Muttrah, Al Khoudh, the Airport zone, and the area typically occupied by food industries in Barka.
